The Flagstick – January 2026
January 27, 2026
Dear Members,
Welcome to a new and exciting year at Cazenovia Golf Club. If you remember, back in November’s edition of the Flagstick, we outlined several of the Projects the Board would be undertaking here in 2026.
While your Board was busy completing a number of those projects during the Holiday Season, our focus in the coming months will be on several key initiatives. In no particular order, here are just a few:
- 2025 Financials completion and approval
- Continued action planning based on 2025 Membership Survey Results
- 2026 Course Operations and Planning Schedule
- Pro Shop Staffing & Management
- Complete review of CGC By-Laws
- New Capital Reserve Policy
- Continued integration of Long-Term Planning
- 2026 Kitchen/Bar Operating & Staffing Plan
In the coming Flagsticks, our Goal will be to take 1 or 2 of these initiatives, as well as other fun topics, and update our Membership accordingly.
So, without further ado, let’s jump into January’s topic. Fall 2025’s Membership Survey. So, let’s discuss your Top Wants/Needs from the results.
When asked, “What is most important to you about Cazenovia Golf Club”, (a good place to start!) over 90% of you said the Golf Course Experience. Focusing on the Course itself should be all our #1 Priority. In 2026, the Board will be working directly with our Superintendent Brent Carroll to develop an annual plan that focuses on course expectations and brings monthly accountability to its outcomes. New this year, Tim (Fuzz) Hughes is heading our Greens Committee. Tim has been on past Boards, and as a Member for many years (not to mention his living proximity to the Maintenance Barn!) we feel Tim will be a great addition. Our plan is to work directly with Tim and Brent on a consistent basis to receive updates, and to make sure the annual plan is on track and successful. Having a detailed Course Operations plan strengthens the tie between the Board and our Superintendent, but also outlines the expectations that both the Board, and more importantly, our Membership have for CGC’s annual playability. Your Board is committed to strengthening its oversight on Course Operations.
Also mentioned in our previous Flagstick, we started the initial phase of our course Irrigation Project. This phase dives into the logistical steps that need clarity, before any dollars are even discussed. Is our current reservoir large enough, will the DEC allow us to pull more water from the Lake, can we get the 3 Phase Power needed? As in any project, there is a lot of groundwork to be accomplished before you see any daylight. But as we saw this past summer, Mother Nature can impose her will on CGC, and it’s our duty to look at any and all options that can keep our most important asset, the Golf Course safe and prospering.
Next, when asked in our Survey, “What are some other renovations the Club should consider”, (besides course upgrades) your next highest response was upgrades to our Locker Rooms. Again, the Board has listened and initial discussions are underway, with the Goal of renovations being completed in 2026.
In conclusion, our Goal in each Flagstick will be to take 1 or 2 topics the Board is currently working on, give you a high-level assessment of our progress, but also try and keep the communication light and readable.
And on that note, please join us at the Caz Bowl on Feb 21st for our Winter Club Get-Together. 5pm for Drinks (Cash Bar) and 6pm for dinner @ $15 per person. Big thanks to Bryan Howles for coordinating!
So, to everyone, stay warm, and be looking out for our next edition of the Flagstick, where we’ll talk about the 2026 Bar & Kitchen Operating Plan, and our completed 2025 Financials.
